Bollywood actress Urmila Matondkar spent her birthday earlier this month learning how to scuba dive.

As she turned a year older on Feb 4 the luscious Urmila Matondkar has finally taken the plunge. Literally!

She has gifted herself a perfect underwater holiday in Koh Samui.

“Being an aquarian I couldn’t think of a better birthday than this, ” cooed the ecstatic water baby from her exotic location on the eve of her birthday. “I’ve been virtually living underwater for the past few days. That’s where I’m on my birthday on Wednesday. Believe you me it’s like being in paradise.”

Urmila is ecstatic about her new passion. “Even my instructor is zapped by my enthusiasm specially since I can’t swim. I have snorkeled in Goa. But unfortunately the water in India isn’t that clean. And I was rather apprehensive to go underwater…but what better time than your birthday to let the mind conquer physical fears?”

The huddle together in their hundreds by a power plant for warmth. Check this out!

If the video is not working you can click here to see it. We’ve seen manatees during holidays in Florida, but never more than 4 or 5 at a time. This is amazing!

Check out this cool video of a frogfish ‘walking’ across the ocean floor.

I remember looking out for frogfish when we went scuba diving in the Red Sea. During the pre-dive briefing, we would go over the hand signals for the type of marine life we might expect to see on the dive. The hand signal we used on our Red Sea dives was a closed fist with the pinky finger up and wiggling. I have read that different areas have different standards for marine life hand signals. Have you used a different hand signal for frogfish? Have you ever seen a frogfish on a dive?

There are a bunch of neat frogfish photos posted over at Dark Roasted Blend today, be sure to check them out!

Earlier this week, President Bush announced three new marine monuments in U.S. territories in the Pacific Ocean. The new areas represent an area of about 200,000 square miles: the northern Marianas Islands and the Mariana Trench; the Rose Atoll (American Samoa); and Wake Island & other nearby remote islands. Back in 2006, President Bush established the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument off of Hawaii. The 140,000 square mile monument was the the largest protected marine area in the U.S. at the time it was created. Read more at the Washington Post.

Did you know that Kate Hudson is a scuba diver? I just read on PopSugar that Kate is a “thrill seeker” in real life and she enjoys heli-skiing and bungee jumping as well. So how about some scuba diving in reel life, Kate?!

Check out this extremely clever Christmas poem from Suck Air Scuba.

A Sea Slug Christmas
by Tim from Suck Air Scuba

Twas the night before Christmas
And I was snug as a bug,
but I couldn’t stop thinking
about that lonely sea slug.
It was on my last dive.
I was forty feet down.
That’s when I saw him,
just moping around.
I waved and I smiled,
and I signed ‘Are you okay?’
He looked at me slowly,
in a small sluggy way.
‘Don’t bother me!
It’s been a bad day!
My girlfriend was eaten
and a fish stole my bed,
and I lost my hat
for my little cold head!’
Taken back as I was
that a sea slug could talk.
I was glad to see him
not get up and walk.
As he scooted away
I wondered what else he could do.
Is it possible that sea slugs
have Christmas too?
I finished my dive
and got out of the sea.
I got as warm and as dry
as a diver can be.
Now I’m laying here thinking,
all warm and well loved,
that maybe I can help
that lonely sea slug.
I jumped from my bed,
and grabbed some old mittens.
I leapt o’re the top
of our four newborn kittens.
I went to the shed
to grab all my gear.
I was pulling it out
and what did I hear.
It was Santa and elves
on top of my house.
He looked down at me laughing
shook his head and said,
‘The tips of those mittens are nice,
but give him these instead.’
He gave me tiny hats,
half a dozen or so.
‘Give them to others
you see as you go.
At the beach you will find
some good friends of mine
to help in your travels
and help you save time.’
So I packed up my things,
and had some good luck
when I found a full tank
in the bed of my truck.
Now down to the beach,
just a mile or so.
I get out and get ready,
and wouldn’t you know,
there was a dive buddy
all ready to go.
We finished our checks,
and waded on in,
then up from the waves
popped a seal and a fin.
The seal said ‘I’m Sammy,
and we are ready to go.
The others are waiting
just down below.
Santa has sent us,
to help you from here.
Just take up the reins,
because, you get to steer.’
We dropped down beside him
and all I could see
were Sammy then Flipper
then Jaws and Moby.
I snatched up the reins
and gave them a shake.
We were moving so quickly
we created a wake.
I got to the spot
where I met the sad slug.
I couldn’t find him
so I turned and I shrugged.
My dive buddy pointed
to go around the bend.
I grabbed on the reins
and we were off again.
I looked and I found him
just under a rock.
I shook him a little
and he woke with a shock.
‘What are you doing?
Can’t you leave me alone?
I’m still upset,
but I found a new home.’
My buddy then tapped me
and pointed straight down.
There were five sea slugs
just scooting around.
They had all lost their hats
and needed somewhere to stay.
The first slug said, ‘There’s room.
I was alone anyway.’
They all moved right in,
and I gave them each a new hat.
I heard one of them say,
‘I wish all divers were like that.’
They all went to sleep.
I went off to the same.
We got out of the water,
and I asked my buddy his name.
He said, ‘It’s Davy.’
So I asked, ‘Where’s home?’
He said, ‘I live in the locker,
down deep and alone.’
He turned and he waved
then sank out of site.
I couldn’t help but think,
This has been an odd night.
I got back to my bed,
all warm and all snug.
Then went to sleep thinking
of a happy sea slug.

Vintage Key Largo Zip Code Dive Location T-ShirtA collection of 14 different Zip Code Dive Locations designs are the latest additions to our shop.

These scuba-diving themed designs look like official postal stamps for different scuba diving locations around the world, similar to the logo for the television hit Beverly Hills 90210. The stamp is tilted at an angle so the red stripe background looks like a diver down flag. Our Key Largo 33037 is shown here. These are fun, original spoof scuba diving designs for anyone that loves to go diving in these exotic locales. Light-colored apparel is offered in regular or vintage-style (vintage-style shown here).

Off-Gassing Scuba T-ShirtOff-Gassing … Please Wait is one of the latest additions to our shop.

This funny scuba diver design reads Off Gassing … Please Wait along with a computer-style image of a process being completed. When all of the boxes are filled with dive flags, it’s time to go diving again! This funny computer-inspired spoof scuba design is great for scuba divers! Also available in B/W (no diver down flag).
